Challenge Summary

I enjoyed the challenge in that it allowed me to really see how I get around. I logged all transportation for this challenge, which also included 152 miles of recreational bike riding, as this is part of my exercise and social activities. I traveled 640 miles during the challenge, which is more that I would normally. This is due to spending time with a friend of mine in Oakland and also included a trip to Point Rays. If I take out the bike exercise and the fun trips I “normally” would have only traveled about 140 miles in the last two weeks, but who is to say what “normal” is? That is why my % of goal is 304%. Less miles are usually better even it they are green miles. The challenge did inspire me to bike even more.

I also looked at my tips by category; work, social, errands, etc and by mode; bike, walk, carpool, etc. after I took out the miles for bike exercise (this seems only fair). This was an interesting analysis. By category, 75% of the trips were for social/civic/fun, 14% for Errands and 11% for work (I work part-time). Driving studies show that commutes to work account for about one quarter of all trips, so this is about right accounting for my part time work. In looking at the modes; 42% was carpooling, 40% drive alone, 14% bike and 4% electric car (this was only for the last week). The mode numbers are much better than average in that I am very conscience about my impacts and how I get around.

Thanks for running this challenge. I had fun with it and learned from it as well and will continue to try and do better.
