Mommy Going Car-less

A few years ago we had a decision point. My husband started his medical training that required him to be at the hospital before public transportation could get him there. He needed our only car. Did we buy another one with all the costs involved, or did I learn to go car-less with kids? I chose the latter and it has been the best decision.

Since that time we have biked who knows how many miles – the bike odometer gave out. I have run the rest. We have biked in rain, heat, wind, and even through another pregnancy.

People look at it as pretty hard core, but it really isn’t. You go to the gym for an hour – I run my kids to karate. I use that commute time as mental health time. I organize my day, set priorities, think through any “brain work” for my job, set that nights menu for dinner. I talk with my kids.

I can’t say I don’t whine, get tired. I really hate wind and the fact the bike trailer is like a sailboat. But I am never tempted to get a car.

We rent or Zipcar when we need to go long distances, but there is so much you can get locally, I rarely need to resort to that.

So, my story is that 3 kids, no car keeps me physically and emotionally healthy.
