Way of Life : )

My mother didn’t learn to drive till I was in high school. So walking or riding our bikes to school was a way of life : ) For the past three years our daughter was part of a walking pool to Laurel School. We looked forward to our early morning walks and we were sad to have to give them up this year when she entered Encinal. It is unfortunate that our district in Menlo Park does not have “neighborhood schools” that are close enough for the major part of the school population to walk to and from school. Biking is an option, though early mornings as sometimes cold and uninviting with pre-arthritic hands : (
When we do get out there and bike to school it is that same old wonderful feeing of freedom that you do not get behind the steering wheel of a car.
I would love to get my daughter biking to school more often, but not just because the school is trying to rake up miles for the “Drive less Challenge”.
When we don’t bike, I refuse to go through a car pool lane. We park at a distance and walk on to the school campus. Over the years it is these little walks or rides to school that have allowed me to get to know other parents as our paths will often cross to and from school. This is why biking and riding to school is also important. The World goes by too fast in a car and the time spent getting places by bike or foot can sometimes add some magic to the day.
